5 Reasons Why Children Struggle With Math

There are many reasons that math can be a challenging subject. For children and teens, the first thing we must look at is their learning style. Not everyone learns the same way. At Mathnasium of Edmonton, we work closely with your child to discover their learning style and make sure the information is being taught to them in a way that they will clearly understand.

Math is a science. It is not a subject that regularly stirs passion and enjoyment unlike the arts or more creative subjects. The formulas are factual and non flexible and have to be learned and understood for your child’s understanding of math to progress. If your child is struggling with keeping up with learning the fundamentals and concepts, succeeding in the subject will become more challenging.

1: You have to learn it!

Let's face it, being told you have to do something isn’t always the best inspiration so at Mathnasium of Edmonton our goal is to make learning math fun! We want to engage your child and build their confidence. Being able to progress and move forward in the subject requires your child or teen knowing and understanding the concepts and formulas before the progress or increase a level. Unfortunately, children are pushed forward without having the proper time or teaching to make sure that they fully grasp the concepts, and just do their best to keep up with the class but not fully understanding the subject. This can damage confidence and really harm your child’s progress in the subject of mathematics. Having a private math tutor can really help your child to maintain traction and understanding along the way and keep up with the group level in school. Sometimes once a child falls behind, catching up is more challenging than the learning itself.

Being able to ask questions and learn at a steady pace with individualized attention from a private math tutor can help your child catch up very quickly. You may even see them excel or surpass their teaching grade level.

2. Math is a science. It is right or wrong.

There’s no middle ground or room for error. You cannot come up with a creative response to a math problem that is not an accurate and exact number. With the subject of Math your child will have to fully grasp the concepts in order to improve their grades and move up each level. This can be intimidating and sometimes overwhelming especially if specific grades are expected or required of them and seem so far out of reach.

At Mathnasium of Edmonton our SE Edmonton math tutoring centre we can help remove the fear and instill confidence in the subject of mathematics. Our private math tutors will work to make the subject fun and easy to learn, and help your child or teen to retain the information and be able to access it freely and independently of their tutor, allowing them to apply it today to day problem solving, in exams or working alone in class at school.

3. Calculators are everywhere!

We all remember being told, that you won't always have a calculator, well, times have changed and day to day mathematical problems can be easily solved with your phone or calculator. Gone are the days where long form division or multiplication tables are known by heart were a necessary part of day to day life. However, being able to do those fundamental mathematical challenges quickly and correctly in your head will make life easier for your child or teen and help them to progress through the more challenging grades and areas of their mathematical education.

Encouraging your child to learn the skills behind these basic mathematical techniques can be a challenge. However, knowing that certain career paths and life goals require a solid understanding of math, may help to inspire your child. Talk with your child about what they want to become when they are older, do the research of the grades required and see how mathematics is frequently a prerequisite for any kind of progression in education. Discuss finances and home economics, how to manage your goals and have the dream home, or car. Mathematics applies to all of the days to day balances required to successfully manage your life and understand how banking, loans and balancing your budgets in order to live a financially healthy life and be stress free! Helping to understand how mathematics really is a relatable subject that is required on a daily basis will help to keep your child focussed and goal oriented.

4. Math requires focus.

There are many distractions daily, and math doesn’t really allow for your child to add their personal input to the subject, other than their understanding of how math works. Take time to help your child practice their math skills whether it be simply working on a day to day event that involves numbers, like planning a grocery shop or budgeting for spending pocket money. At a higher level, help and support your child in practicing using their new skills and techniques they are learning so that they are able to retain the information and put it into action.

5. It isn’t always fun!
